We kicked-off the 2011 PAR campaign by distributing approximately 100 seed packets and 800 plants. Hot peppers, the hotter the better, was the plant most in demand with tomatoes coming in second. The plant that generated the most curiosity, especially from kids, was eggplant! Many had never tried eating the vegetable and parents were quite interested in how to prepare it. All of these plants grow well in containers and many people were growing in containers.
PAR volunteers helped to launch a
Mobile Pantry Caring Garden at the Walter F. Lewis Community Garden at Jones Farm in Chelmsord. American Training volunteers worked with PAR and MVFB volunteers. The garden reaped 446 pounds of produce for the Mobile Pantry. A sharing garden was also planned with the
Caleb Group.
The PAR Jar received a small donation with the proceeds going to the Mobile Pantry Caring Garden. The Home Depot made a substantial donation of supplies to develop the Mobile Pantry Carting Garden and support seed starting.
Home gardeners donated 452 pounds of produce to the Mobile Pantry!
Community gardeners from HUD, Tutu's Garden, the Community Gardens Greenhouse, and Franklin Court donated 2,946 pounds of produce to various pantries and agencies. The Community Gardens Greenhouse also donated over 2,000 plants to their gardeners.
Thank you to all who particpated in this year's campaign!
